To own your home is defined as achieving the American dream
but no one ever talks about the seriousness that surrounds home ownership like
being able to DESIGN & DECORATE! Ha! I hope you didn’t think I was talking
about paying a mortgage.
We all have seen the many Pinterest boards, blogs, and
Instagram accounts dedicated to Home Décor. Since S.A.C. is the one place where
Style is everything why don’t we explore the very exciting world of home
furnishing, fixtures, fabric, wallpaper, and deep soaking tubs! In today’s
very modern, sleek but retro loving world we have so many things to dive into.
So let’s start with wall paper!
Back in the day my grandmother would make me and my cousin,
Toya, help her remove and install wallpaper almost every 6 months which made
me absolutely hate it when I was 13! Now, I can’t think about decorating my
home without it. I think of wallpaper as the shoes to every outfit. Just think
about it. You take the time to decide which top goes best with those pants and
which blazer will enhance the appearance of your hips in that power suit you can’t
make a deal without wearing so why not think of wallpaper in the same way? Take your time to pick out the perfect comfy sofa or chaise lounge for your
family room or media room then take a moment to find that accent wallpaper!
For a media room, I always think of something dark, with a
small amount of print and a material that will outlast the endless amount of
movie nights with family and friends. For a bedroom, specifically a master
bedroom, I would go with something that expresses who you are or what you want
your bedroom to represent. For example, I always decorate my master bedroom
based on my favorite hotel suites. I remember the first time I stayed in a
Hyatt King Suite at the Piedmont Center in Atlanta, Georgia. I fell in love
with all things mirrored and glamorous and comfy. I never knew how much of my
personal style my bedroom was lacking until that day. My husband and I love for
our bedroom to be a place of relaxation, Zen, and very much adult! This is the
one place in our home where we don’t consider the children! This is our private
space to relax, watch our adult shows, and prop our feet up on a plush sofa
with matching ottoman. I always accent the sofa with nice pillows that I pick
up from Target, Homegoods, and the many home décor boutiques I find while out
on the road.
This year will be the first year that our daughter and son
will be able to decorate their rooms with more than just pictures! For a little
girl’s room, we like to incorporate their personal style along with what the
parent’s want the room to be. For example, if your child will use this room to
do more than sleeping then take into consideration her personality because this
will be the room she will invite friends and cousins over to play in. If she is
anything like my bubbly and always hyper but preppy and glam-diva-daughter feel
free to mix and match prints with colors, designs, and textures. My child loves
Pink! But she also loves muted colors like pale yellows and mint. So, instead
of completing her room in just those 3 colors we decided to use pink as an
accent color for pillows and trim, mint paint on one wall and the pale yellow
based wall paper with a wild pattern. Since the mint is her second favorite
color we will turn her multi-purpose bunk bed with desk below (from PBTeen)
in the direction of the mint painted wall. In between the fun wallpaper and
the pale yellow accent wall will be her personal space. She has free reign over
the design of this space which, as of right now, will include fluffy pillow and
fur covered bean bags and a fun accent rug with a free-standing wall mirror
with black trim.
The main thing to remember when using wallpaper is to never
let it take over your entire home. Choose wisely and only use it in spaces that
would beneficial to your home’s décor. Meaning, every bathroom, bedroom and
closet does not need to be papered. After visiting the store or researching
online, create a visual board. Tear pictures from magazines or create a
Pinterest Board just for wallpaper like ours (Papered Walls).
Then take it a step further by separating the wallpaper selections by rooms.
If you find yourself with papered walls in more than 30% of your home (meaning
more than 3 rooms/3 walls) then you have taken it too far! Go back and
reevaluate your choices and opt for something else in the areas you eliminated
like a photo gallery wall or glass or metallic tile. The
bottom line is your home décor should be a reflection of yourself and your
family. Don’t take yourself too seriously and remember to always have fun! Choose things
that you can live with for longer than 6 months and most importantly take your
time. After all, you are decorating your American Dream!
